I used to be a great fan of the compact C-Series of digital cameras (C-2020Z to C-5060WZ, while they were still made), and I really like their digital SLRs (I am less enthusiastic about their recent compact offerings in this area, though). But there is one thing from Olympus which I really despise and hate. This thing is the xD-Picture memory card, which Olympus insists on using in all their cameras. What's wrong with the xD-Picture standard? Short and simple: these cards are the slowest-performing, most size-limited, and least widespread on the market, offering nothing in exchange for these limitations except for higher prices. Even Fuji, the co-founder of the standard, seems to be backpedaling now from the concept (offering combined xD/SD slots, which accept also the popular Secure Digital cards), only Olympus keeps touting the xD as a great triumph of memory technology. Technically, there are two reasons behind the inferiority of xD cards as compared to the competing ones (Compact Flash and Secure Digital): • The xD uses the (this is at least true about the 'M' and 'M+' types, the latter being the only one currently manufactured; I am not sure about the 'H' type or the original one, without the letter denomination). An MLC memory cell has four (not the usual two) charge states: fully off, slightly on, mostly on, and fully on; therefore each cell can store two bits of information, not just one. (There are also eight-level designs, three bits per cell, but this is not important here.) This makes multi-level cards cheaper to manufacture (per byte), but also slower, more power-hungry, and less reliable (according to the Maximum PC magazine, MLC memory has a life span of about 10,000 write cycles, while SLC — 100,000, a factor of ten!) While some bargain Compact Flash and Secure Digital cards use the multi-level cells, most stick to the single-level approach; at least you have a choice. For example, Transcend offers CF cards of both single- and multi-level design. Some Olympus digital point-and-shoot cameras come equipped with an adapter (MASD-1), which will enable microSD memory cards to be used when capturing images. The microSD cards are emerging in consumer electronic devices, including mobile phones and PDAs. Users can also easily display photos on their HDTVs. The MLC variety sells for less than half of the price of the least expensive SLC version (verified January, 2009). • In the CF and SD cards, the controller is built into the card. This costs a bit extra, but provides an additional layer of interfacing between the card and the client device (camera); that layer is responsible, among others, for card maintenance: marking and excluding bad areas, wear leveling (assuring that all areas are used equally, so that the wear spreads off). Most importantly, the camera just asks the controller to write some data; how this is being done is up to the controller. If the physical structure of data on the new card model is changed, the new controller on that card will know how to handle that, the camera does not need to. In xD-Picture cards, the camera itself is responsible for providing that functionality. Cards are slightly less expensive, but the camera has to have an intimate knowledge how to manage a card and write to it. If a new version of the card changes the physical data structure, the camera will not be able to handle it. In the best case, a firmware update may address the problem; in the worst — the camera will simply not work with the new card. We've seen that a lot with the SmartMedia standard, where almost any new card size would not work with older cameras. Yes, these cards were similar to the xD: no controller, either. With the xD the situation is almost (if not quite) as bad. To see which Olympus xD-based cameras are no longer supported by the current breed of cards, check. My measurements show that the Olympus flagship, the E-3, takes about 0.4 of a second to write a raw image to a SanDisk Extreme IV card (2007), 0.7 s to an Extreme III (2006), and 2.4 seconds to an xD 'H' card (2006). The new, 'improved' M+ card (2008) is even slower: 3.0 seconds. Some history I've been using Olympus cameras since the year 2000 (C-3000Z), when SmartMedia cards wee the most common standard (even more popular than Compact Flash at that time). SmartMedia was not really a good standard: missing the built-in controller it suffered the same compatibility problems as xD-Picture, and the exposed electrical contacts made the card prone to being zapped by static electricity. (I had at least three go dead within a month, most probably for that reason). Therefore I wasn't surprised when Olympus and Fuji came up with the new xD-Picture standard, at least sturdier mechanically, and with promised speeds and capacities well beyond those of the SM. Here is the timeline: • 2002: Olympus and Fuji drop support for the SmartMedia card standard, moving to the new xD-Picture card. At that time, the standard looks good, with the size similar to that of the SD, which, while introduced two years earlier, at that moment was far from today's popularity. ![]() The cards were eventually made in sizes up to 512 MB (1/2 GB). • 2005: Two new xD-Picture flavors introduced, replacing the original one: the 'M' and 'H' type (standing for 'medium' and 'high' speed, respectively). The 'M' card is actually slower than the original (without the letter designation), while 'H' is, according to the press release, up to three times faster than 'M' (this is in contradiction to the data in ). Cards up to 8 GB were promised, but never materialized. ![]() • 2007: The 'H' cards mysteriously disappear; it seems they are no longer made, although I saw no notice to this effect. According to a, they were just too expensive to make. • 2008: In a January press release, Olympus announces another xD flavor, 'M+' as 'the ultimate removable storage media for digital photos', with 'lightning-fast transfers and impressive storage capacity' — claiming 'speeds up to 1.5 times faster than Type M' and 'capacity up to 2 GB'. Actually, the 'new, improved' card is slower than the older type 'H', the capacity is limited to 2 GB, and there is no longer any talk about 8 GB. Three years of progress — and a step back. Adding offense to injury OK, it is obvious that the xD-Picture standard is inferior in all aspects, compared to others. But the story does not end here. There are some related business practices, which are rather questionable. First, the panorama-stitching feature available in some Olympus cameras — but only if an Olympus-brand xD-Picture card is used. There are no technical reasons behind that: one memory card is as good as any other (read: non-Olympus, xD-Picture or not). ![]() The card just has a piece of data on it, saying: 'I'm an Olympus xD-Picture card, please unlock the panorama stitching'. When the camera sees this information, it unlocks the intentionally disabled feature. I find this simply disgusting. Second, some image effects in the Olympus Master software remain disabled, unless the user enters the unlock code, provided with Olympus-branded xD-picture cards. While no semi-literate user would want to use Olympus Master for any semi-serious image processing, the intent behind this practice is just ugly. Disabling the autofocus unless an Olympus-brand filter (appropriately priced!) is used on the lens? What should be done? The right thing to do would be to close this infamous chapter in history, and move on to the SD cards, available in convenience stores. They shoot horses, don't they? The progress of technology has seen many dead-end alleys and false starts; there is nothing wrong about it, unless corporate greed and stubbornness prevail, preventing the company from admitting a step in the wrong direction and from rectifying the situation. In the long run, such honesty is in the best interest of both the manufacturer and the consumer. Obviously, the practice of disabling camera or software features unless an Olympus xD-Picture card is used (or unlock code provided) has to stop. The sooner the better; someone in the corporate HQ must understand that this hurts company's credibility, especially among literate users. Choosing “Yes, let’s activate Windows over the Internet now” at that point (if that option was offered) might lead past the activation process, if the machine was already activated. Or at least that was what had seemed to happen to me, the first time, when I say that my system was registered by magic. The WPA.DBL Activation Method The alternate activation method I tried first was mentioned by and detailed. The latter explained that I could activate WinXP simply by copying C: Windows System32 wpa.dbl from the previous installation of Windows XP on this same computer. They warned that it would not work on a different machine. I had already activated WinXP on a previous VirtualBox VM, identical in all regards except that, this time, I set the virtual hard disk drive (HDD) to be 20GB rather than 10GB. I was not sure whether that difference would make this appear to be a different machine. In this method, I needed to boot into Safe Mode. Normally, I would do that by hitting F8 as the computer started to boot. But in the case of this VM, was rather to boot into Normal Mode and then go into Start > Run > msconfig > BOOT.INI tab > check /SAFEBOOT > OK > Restart. Once I was in Safe Mode, Online Tech Tips said, I needed to use Windows Explorer to go into C: Windows System32 > rename wpa.dbl to be wpa.old > copy in the wpa.dbl from my previous installation. Then I had to go back to the BOOT.INI tab and uncheck /SAFEBOOT > OK > Restart. That put me back in Normal Mode. That method did not work. Upon reboot, I got a message: Windows Product Activation This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now? Normally, I would have 30 days after installing WinXP before activation would be compelled. In this case, it seemed that I had triggered this message by trying to activate in the normal way and getting that message (above) that I had used this product key too many times. When I clicked No at this point, I expected to be locked out of the system. But instead, I was allowed to proceed into WinXP as usual. I guessed that this method had not worked, for me, because of that change from a 10GB to 20GB system drive in the VM. It was also possible that my previous activation efforts had somehow muddied the waters. Incidentally, use of msconfig had now resulted in a System Configuration Utility message, each time I rebooted, informing me that I had to go back into msconfig > General tab > select Normal Startup > OK > Restart. The Registry Edit Method Next on the list, we had a method explained by, which offered these remarks: You can bypass the activation process by editing the Windows registry and using an OEM key, though this technically violates your license agreement with Microsoft. Only use the following if you are unable to activate and you have a legally-purchased copy of Windows XP. Although WikiHow described the process differently, I interpreted their advice as encouraging me to begin with this registry edit file: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion WPAEvents] 'OOBETimer'=hex:ff,d5,71,d6,8b,6a,8d,6f,d5,33,93,fd; Original setting:; 'OOBETimer'=hex:eb,54,8c,c6,0e,45,17,59,55,5b,f4,30 I pasted those lines into Notepad, named the file WinXPActivation.reg, and ran it in WinXP. It indicated that the registry had been modified successfully, and when I ran Start > Run > regedit, I could see those new values at the registry location stated in that file. Now, WikiHow said, at that same registry address, I had to right-click on the WPAEvents folder > Permissions > select SYSTEM > check the Deny Full Control box > OK > Yes > exit regedit. Next, I had to enter this command:%systemroot% system32 oobe msoobe.exe /a (or simply oobe/msoobe /a). This was, as above, the command to start the activator. WikiHow said that, if I had followed the foregoing steps correctly, I would now see this message: Activate Windows Windows Product Activation Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit. That is what I saw. So it worked. It had not worked for me on a previous try. Presumably I had messed up some detail in the process on that earlier attempt. The OEM Key Method That same article said that, if the Registry Key Method did not work for me, I could proceed with another approach that might. This method started where the previous one left off. If the oobe/msoobe /a command didn’t give me “Windows is already activated,” then it would presumably give me the usual activation options: activate over the Internet now, activate by telephone now, or remind me to activate every few days. The advice here was to choose “Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows.” Next, apparently there would be an option to Change Product Key. At that point, the user would enter this product key: THMPV 77D6F 94376 8HGKG VRDRQ. Indicated that a lot of people were familiar with that key as an alternative for activating Windows XP. After entering that key, WikiHow said the user should click the Update button and then select Remind Me Later. Then restart the computer and go to Start > Run >%system. I had no idea how that sequence worked, and I did not test it, but that was the end of the WikiHow advice. Other Methods I did not explore further, except that I did develop to help me find methods other than those described above. It tentatively appeared that there might be a number of alternate activation methods. The Regedit method worked for me too, but I have a genuine XP professional CD that I want to run on the Virtual Machine as the old computer where I used to run it is almost gone. I have installed it in the VM and after the registry modification I am able to start the XP machine without any message requesting it’s activation for several days, but when the countdown for activation comes to about 7 days, i.e. About more or less 20 some days after installation, y start getting messages telling me that there are 7 days left for activation. But it´s impossible to activate it online because Microsoft servers for this task cannot be reached. I suspect they are all out of service. Finally when the countdown comes to zero days left, that’s it. XP cannot be activated, it stops running and I need to re-install it again and begin from square one, again. I have done this twice, now. FYI – 1) No problems to access the internet from the web browser, That’s why I suspect Microsoft servers must be out.for online activation. 2) When I run the “oobe/msoobe /a” from Start / Run command line, I get a window telling me that XP is already active and asks for confirmation with an OK button. Due to changes in FCC regulations, it is now easier to unlock mobile phones and switch providers. BYOD cell phone plans are becoming more popular due to the money saving potential. CDMA Different cell phone providers use different technologies; either GSM or CDMA. T-Mobile and AT&T operate on the GSM network technology, while Verizon and Sprint operate on the CDMA technology. For the consumer, this means that switching providers is generally limited to networks that operate on the same network technology, though there are some exceptions. The difference between GSM and CDMA is that GSM-compatible devices use a SIM card to identify subscribers, whereas CDMA-compatible devices use only electronic serial numbers (ESN) to identify subscribers. A GSM compatible device still uses a serial number, but it's called an IMEI. A SIM card can be removed from one device and inserted into another within minutes using a phone from the same carrier, while a CDMA phone utilizing an ESN generally has to be reprogrammed. Unlocked T-Mobile devices should be able to easily convert to AT&T. In some cases, an unlocked T-Mobile 4G LTE device can be converted to Verizon. How to Unlock a Sprint Phone (CDMA) Like the other major U.S. Carriers, in order to unlock a Sprint device, the device must not have been reported as lost or stolen and can't be associated with any fraudulent activity, the contract must be fulfilled with no outstanding balance and financed phones (Sprint Easy Pay, Sprint Lease and iPhone for Life) must be paid in full. Sprint customers now receive a notification when their device is eligible to unlock and phones launched (not purchased, launched) after February 2015 are automatically unlocked. Sprint is unique in that they allow eligible customers to unlock their device for international travel. This does mean that the device will necessary be unlocked for domestic use. Activating a Sprint device on another carrier's network is more difficult compared to other cell phone providers. Sprint phones have been known to be mostly incompatible with the Verizon service. On the other hand, some Sprint devices have dual compatibility meaning they support both GSM and CDMA. These phones are identified as 'global' phones and may be able to be used on the T-Mobile and AT&T networks. The device itself determines compatibility as some global device features don't always function properly. Other Cell Phone Provider Options An MVNO is a mobile network virtual operator. An MVNO is a cell phone carrier that subsists on the network infrastructure and radio spectrum of a larger mobile network. They pay a wholesale fee and then sells the service at retail prices under their own branding. Essentially, an MVNO is more of a reseller versus a competitor. They are typically much smaller than their wholesaler and can afford to operate on lower profit margins, while providing more for the money. BYOD Cell Phone Plans Handset satisfaction doesn't always lead to satisfaction with a cell phone provider. Researching BYOD cell phone plans might lead to finding a cell phone provider that offers cost-savings as well as the ability to avoid lengthy cell phone contracts. Before unlocking, device compatibility should be checked with the potential cell phone provider of the BYOD Cell Phone Plan. MVNOs allow for more options to switch from GSM to GSM and CDMA to CDMA, however at the end of the day, the money still goes to the same place. After contract completion or paying off a financed cell phone is the perfect time to research BYOD cell phone plans to save money. You know how much of a pain it has been to activate a non-Verizon branded Nexus 6 on Verizon, even though the phone is completely unlocked at all times and fully works on Verizon’s airwaves? For a while, it was pretty tough. In fact, it took months before Verizon allowed the Nexus 6 from Google Play or other carriers to be activated on its network. Now, we’re talking activating, not SIM-swapping. There is a difference here. Other examples include iOS devices such as iPhone 6 and 6 Plus or iPad Air.” Outside of those, more could be added once they are certified. Of course, with unlocked phones that have supported Verizon CDMA and LTE bands, you can just swap in an already activated SIM card and get busy. That’s the “SIM-swapping” we talked about earlier. But with activation, this might be the solution, assuming your device is certified. Side note: Holy sh*t, I never want to type “certified” ever again. I just bought a SIM off ebay and set the phone up, then activated it via the VZW website right when I gave it to her. But that only worked because the SIM was legal from whomever I bought it from, and I was activating a VZW sold phone. The N6 wouldn’t have worked as the IMEI was blocked back then. Hoping the new Moto X doesn’t suffer the same problems. I walked into a Verizon corporate store (don’t use preferred retailers), told them I was meeting a guy there to buy a Nexus 6 off craigslist. Said I needed them to verify the ESN, activate the phone to my plan (once they see I’m grandfathered they understand what I’m doing), and swap out the micro sim from my 1st Gen Moto X for a nano sim with the Nexus 6. They handled everything I requested in about 10-15 minutes and no money out of my pocket except to the guy from craigslist who sold me the phone. I’ve found they don’t typically mind doing stuff like that especially if you’re on a grandfathered plan. At the most they might charge you for the nano sim but that’s kind of a big if in my experience. I never said it was difficult and I was well aware of the activation issues and work arounds. I had a microsim in my current phone, needed a nano. Before cutting mine I tried two stores within a very close distance of my house to just to see if I could get lucky. Realized I couldn’t get them to activate a nano sim for a GS4 and use the adapter or activate a nano sim for a N6. Gave up and cut mine, wasted probably 2 hours of my day.. But yes, these things are non issues now as verizon has resolved the difficulty. No, because Verizon still uses CDMA which takes an MEID/ESN to verify, validate and be active on the network to gain VOICE in areas that VoLTE (or with a device that does not have VoLTE) fails or does not work. Think of it like this. You can swap SIM for LTE-ONLY Data, but the voice portion on all devices including the Nexus 6 and iPhone 6 require CDMA as the main voice standard, and IF and WHERE VoLTE is deployed, if the device supports it, then it will use VoLTE over CDMA. In this case, if a device was capable of Verizon’s Advanced Calling (VoLTE by a brand), AND had that application active (which can’t just be downloaded into any ol’ device) then theoretically the device regardless if it has CDMA would work, then you wouldnt need MEID/ESN verification and could just SIM swap. But because Verizon relies so heavily on CDMA for voice, locked down VoLTE on their network, it’s hard to try to get anything that uses Band 13 active without CDMA included. |
